DEV.DIARY Illustrating the Environment of Apopia

Hello my friends!

Today, I want to share with you our process of illustrating the environment of Apopia.

I’m going to be 100% transparent and honest with you… actually, we were NOT confident about this task at all!

 

You know, our development began in 2017. At that time, Ricky and I only had the idea of The Cave and The World outside…

As you can see, the only more solid scene at that time was The Cave. So, the development of the world actually began there.

 

Before making game, my background was all about animations. However, as I began designing Apopia, I realize that developing a BG for game is totally different from animations.

And I personally do not consider myself someone who has a very good art sense. Therefore, I found it extremely difficult to illustrate a good BG for Apopia. So, what I did, was spending LOTS of time and effort, keey trying and trying until I get the result that I can give it a pass.

 

Since 2022, we began developing Apopia: Sugar Coated Tale. And fortunately, we got a talented artist Hanna to be our art director. But she’s also not experienced in game development XD

But the process became more efficient, because I’m not the only one to struggle trying to get little something done. But we have two different brains to work together and create something that is beautiful.

And to be honest, we kept drawing, renewing, refining the BGs non-stop during all these years. And we only stopped working the night before the release of the game! lol

It is because we really really want the environment to not only look good, but also make it a world where our players will want to explore, live and love.
